What is Dulse?

Here at Dulse Co., we grow Pacific dulse (Palmaria mollis). This is a species of red seaweed native to the northern hemisphere of the Pacific ocean. It has tremendous health benefits which have been used for medicinal and culinary purposes for centuries.

Pacific dulse is a complete protein - meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids. Dulse is one of a few plant sources that provide this, which makes it a great meat/dairy substitute for vegans and vegetarians. On top of this, dulse also carries an abundance of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. You can check out our nutrition page for more information on this.

All it takes to grow Pacific dulse is sunlight and seawater. It has adapted to live within a tumble-culture, which means that it flows freely within our tanks - only rolling up to the surface for sunlight. Tumbling also aids in the growth process by breaking and duplicating the dulse into new pieces. This natural growth cycle requires minimal resources, making Pacific dulse an exceptionally sustainable sea vegetable with a very small environmental footprint.
